The Walkup collection consists of the largest intact set of records related to the history of Northern Arizona University. Because of the length of Walkup's tenure as University President these files cover much of NAU's formative years. Topics covered in these files include NAU's transformation from College to University status, the creation of the Forestry program, and the construction of South Campus, many new dormitories, and the building of the Skydome, to name a few. In addition the collection contains files pertaining to the general operation of the university and Walkup's Arizona Board of Regents Files.

John Lawrence Walkup was born in Missouri in 1914. His father was a farmer and a stockman, and both of his parents had college educations. Walkup graduated from high school in 1932, as salutatorian of his class. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in 1936 from Central Missouri State College and embarked on a career as an educator.
